When I first started knitting I swore to myself I would never knit socks. They seemed like a weird thing to knit, so much work for something that goes on your feet. Over time though I wanted to try something new, other then mittens or a sweater I have knit most "normal" things. So I really long time ago I cast on a sock...
I used the Foot Ovens pattern, I mean it was bulky yarn I wanted it to go fast. I also figure with a sock this bulky even I couldn't mess up... fast forward...
You know from the top it really doesn't look that bad, and then you see the rest of it...
It is way too big, I mean like this could fit a giant's foot big. Where is Hagrid when you need him? It's too big around, too long, to big in the ankle. It is just a hot mess in crazy town. I know most people's first socks don't really turn out but I was really hoping! I mean I have been lucky so far that all of my other first tries turned out okay (Remember the really hard but adorable elephant?) But this one just did not happen.
I have more bulky yarn in black so I think I am going to try knitting this pair again. For now this will stay the lonely sock that just didn't work. Have any of you had a project that just bombed like this? Where you just shove it in a closet and pretend you didn't knit that? I honestly debated even posting this but I figured maybe you guys would have some great hints and tricks to sock knitting! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
When you mention bombed projects I have a nasty flashback of colorwork baby sweater of 2011. Don't be too hard on yourself! The next pair are going to be amazing I know it : )
ReplyDeleteMy first pair of socks could have fit Hagrid, too - only I spent months knitting them out of fingering-weight yarn on size 0 needles. I was pretty devastated. :/ However, my subsequent pairs got better and better, and I know yours will, too! Don't give up! :)
ReplyDeletei wish i could knit :(

I love knitting socks! I think the best kind of sock pattern to start off with is one with ribbing, that way you don't have to worry too much about the fit because it will stretch. These were my first pair of socks, and I think the fact that it was such a simple pattern really worked in my favor: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/beaniest17/simple-rib-socks
ReplyDeleteThe beauty behind sock knitting is that over time, you start to really understand which needles, yarn, and patterns work best for your feet. After that, a drawer full of hand-knit socks can't be beat!
